Cameron makes a good start on the world economic stage

Sean O'Grady

102470371 300x202 Cameron makes a good start on the world economic stageDavid Cameron appears to be carrying all before him. He has, in essence, got the G8 and G20 to agree with his agenda for fiscal conservatism. The Europeans like him and apparently respect what he is doing, even after the little row over the European Peoples Party; trivial indeed when set against the big challenges the continent faces now. And he has even managed not – so it appears – to upset Obama in the process.

A good start for his international economic diplomacy then; not yet in the global leadership role Gordon Brown managed to carve out, and moving in a very different direction; but an impressive debut nonetheless.

Do these politicians really think we care if they get a lift if Obama’s helicopter ? Do they think that them giving each other bottles of beer in front of the TV cameras makes us think they are “real blokes”. Such PR activity is actually quite tasteless. And the cost of all this strutting in front of the TV cameras; well does anybody think Cameron paid for his own flights, etc. Does anybody think that when they all came to Scotland that some philanthropist picked-up the bill ?

Given that everything is agreed beforehand, that meetings themselves are just to allow these politicians to strut around getting all the PR they can – all at our taxpayers expense.

I find such waste in poor taste. Just think of all the carbon this farce generated, let alone all the taxpayers money down the drain. But at least Dave gave Obama a bottle of beer and got one back in return !!

You reckon? As Denis MacShane, the Labour MP pointed out today in parliament, DC told us so himself, so it must be true.Tell you what I was hoping Denis MacShane had said – “Wouldn’t it be generous of you, Prime Minister, if you had mentioned the fact that Britain was the ONLY country to have fulfilled its promises on Aid to Africa. The promises Tony Blair made at the Gleneagles 2005 gathering. The gathering thus far generally considered unequalled by any before.”

I wouldn’t have expected Harman to be so gracious or fair-minded. After all it’s only about AID to Africa! She’s an absent-minded airbrusher like many of them. Anyway she had already mentioned Brown and his economic genius. Denis could have though.
