Michael Gove shoots from the hip

Fastidious and sloppy?

You’d be hard pressed to find a more fastidious politician than the Education Secretary, Michael Gove. So all this public apologising for misleading schools on whether they will get funds to rebuild or refurbish must be very painful for him.

But it’s not the first time that Gove has had a hand in misleading Parliament and the public. Last November, he prepared his party leader to attack the Government for funding Islamist schools out of a budget designed to counter extremism. But Gove hadn’t done his preparation properly. He’d got muddled up about the names of the funds. The central point was valid. Islamist schools were being funded by the state. But the mistake about which arm of the state was funding them blunted the attack and embarrassed David Cameron (who had to apologise).

Any more mistakes like this and people are going to conclude that, fastidious though Gove might be when it comes to public speaking, he’s also got a worrying tendency to shoot from the hip.

Does Fastidious mean completely self justifying and incompetent?

I actually agree Gove would not make this mistake without reason. I think Gove took special pleasure in giving people 2 days grace and then sticking the knee in. Just as he seems to have a eugenic view of society and has plans to remove free school meals because poverty of children is their karma I guess – something he denies in the most semantic terms. All to pay for the greater glorification of the middle classes in their ‘free’ schools.

Gove’s gratification should surely not be an excuse not to sack him since in true New Labour style his excuse will be utter incompetence and ignorance. Is Cameron as tolerant of such incompetence, however feigned, as Blair/Brown were?

he’s probably a decent enough cove, but he comes across as a prig and a pipsqueak, rather like a bright 6th former. he needs to bit a bit more ballsy, when they drop. i rather like him, but he can be a bit of a fraud-aren’t we all?me. i think education is an harmful waste of time and money, like most human endeavours; it’s a shiboleth
