The Miracle Beer Diet
According to an article in the Independent on Sunday last week Real Ale is finally shaking off its ‘beardy image’.
The number of women drinkers who have tried Real Ale has apparently doubled in the past two years, according to research from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). As Glyn Roberts, a landlord quoted in the article says, (perhaps a little optimistically) ‘Real Ale is almost becoming cool’.
But beer is not just ‘cool’. It could also help you lose weight!
Today CAMRA released details of research rubbishing the myth that wine contains fewer calories than beer. According to figures from CAMRA and the Beer Academy, 34% of men and 29% of women believe that beer contains more calories than other alcoholic drinks.
Not so, says a new report by the leading health journalist Isla Whitcroft entitled, ‘Beer the Natural Choice’.
A half pint of 3.8% bitter, the report says, has 85 calories; a medium glass of red wine has 119 calories and a bottle of 5% alcopop has 179 calories.
The scientific evidence, therefore, shows that switching from other alcoholic beverages to beer can actually assist with weight loss if drunk in moderation. Not only that but swapping wine for beer, for just one week, could save as many calories as a half hour jog.
This is all extremely reassuring news in the week of the Great British Beer Festival. The Earls Court based festival runs from today until the 7th of August and there will be over 700 Real Ales, Ciders and Foreign Beers available for health conscious drinkers.
So, for the sake of your health and your waistline make sure you pop down there for a look. And for goodness sake make sure you don’t go for a jog.
You might spill your beer.
