The Coalition hoist by its own petard
Nick Clegg actually makes a pretty reasonable argument in defence of the emergency Budget today as a progressive package in the Financial Times.
The trouble is, he’s hamstrung by the way George Osborne presented his Budget.
In his FT piece Clegg says “you cannot measure poverty with a snapshot”.
Yes, but a snapshot was exactly what the Treasury produced when it put out this graphic (to much fanfare) back in June, to show that the wealthy would bear the greatest burden proportionately:
