Gareth Purnell

Denmark v England, tonight 7.15pm

Lay Denmark at 5-2

I’m not a big fan of betting on friendlies, but Fabio Capello is not a man to take any international game lightly and more importantly he has instilled an atmosphere within the England camp where everyone, even the big names, think they are playing for their places. All the indications are that he intends to select as strong a team as is available in this fixture as we build up towards next month’s Euro 2012 competitive fixture against Wales, and that being the case, England, who are ranked sixth in the world should have too much for 27th ranked Denmark, who were knocked out at the group stages of the World Cup. However, with Gerard injured and a raft of substitutions sure to break up the rhythm of the game, I would rather lay Denmark and have the draw on our side, than back England at 11-8. I also expect there to be very few bookings, as that’s the general trend in friendlies these days.

Advices
With Peter Crouch also withdrawing from the squad, Aston Villa’s £18m man Darren Bent will be looking for a start and there may be a bit of value in backing him to score the first goal at a generally available 7-1. He’s 6/4 to score at any time. Wait until you see the starting line up before getting involved.
