Caught & Social: King of the after party

Untitled 128 300x285 Caught & Social: King of the after partyAfter being crowned King of the Orange British Academy Film Awards, Colin Firth seemed to be going for the “King of the after party”title after he celebrated his win until 4am. After leaving the official after party, Firth headed to the brand new W Hotel (it only opened yesterday) for producer Harvey Weinstein’s bash. Also in an understandably jubilant mood was the best supporting actress winner Helena Bonham Carter, who celebrated by grabbing Emma Watson around the neck. HBC, as she might be known to her friends, was then swept up by husband Tim Burton and into the back of a car home. Watson meanwhile was buttonholed by director Darren Aronofsky to talk film projects. At the other side of the Wyld bar, it was less business and more pleasure as model David Gandy chatted with fellow model Lily Cole. But amidst the joyousness and coupling was the sadder sight of Rupert Grint. The actor was overheard telling a friend that now that Harry Potter had finished, he felt at a loss and didn’t know what to do with himself. Someone find this titian-haired hunk a part – please.

Fearne shows off her new pads

Not content with film and music stars indulging in some industry back slapping, the world of fashion and vague celebrity had its turn to celebrate itself last night at the Elle Style Awards. Those out to pay respects to their style icons included Alexa Chung, Boy George and Fearne Cotton, who wore a pair of shoulder pads that wouldn’t look out of place in American football.

Scene & heard

It looks like the cuts are already starting to bite at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. After leaving the Bafta awards dinner, the Conservative Culture minister Ed Vaizey was spotted gathering up an armful of specially made table mats. Bypassing the Soho House after party, the MP for Wantage and Didcot headed off into the night looking extremely happy with his haul. Could this be it for Chris Morris? The comic and director should have been celebrating when his film Four Lions, a comedy set inside a terrorist cell, won an award for outstanding British debut. But he was nowhere to be seen, leaving actor Nigel Lindsay to pick up the award on his behalf and read out a text he had received from Morris, which read: “Dowsed in petrol, Zippo at the ready.”When asked later whether Morris had gone through with his threat, Lindsay said, “I don’t know, I’ve just got a message from his son, he says his dad’s on fire.”

Two heads are better than one

They don’t get called luvvies for nothing. Ralph Fiennes goes tête a tête with Vanessa Redgrave as they promote new film Coriolanus at the Berlin Film Festival. Perhaps buoyed by the warm reception, the film’s director Fiennes hinted that he would like to get to bring more Shakespeare to the screen, namely Antony and Cleopatra. “Not only is it an extraordinarily great love story, but it’s written, arguably, quite cinematically,”he said. “I can’t help feeling [that] if Shakespeare was alive today, he would write very easily for the cinema.”
