Caught & Social: Brad’s Cannes opener for new film
Brad Pitt and wife Angelina Jolie led a star-crammed red carpet for the premiere of his new film The Tree of Life in Cannes. There was no sign of the highly-celebrated, but notoriously shy director Terence Malick, who Pitt defended, saying: “An artist should not have to be a salesman.”In the movie, Pitt plays a stern 1950s father and at the film’s press conference he said he hoped his own children saw him as a “damned fine actor”. When asked about how he keeps his own sizeable brood in line, he joked: “I beat my kids regularly… It seems to do the trick. And I deprive them of meals.” Malick’s much-anticipated film has already been touted as the one that could land twice-nominated Pitt an Oscar. But after the screening was met by both cheers and boos by the audience, that prospect may be less likely.

Todd Phillips, director of The Hangover 2, says it wasn’t just one cast or crew member who objected to a cameo by Mel Gibson. “A lot of people voiced opinions,”he says. “Yes, I’m the director and I could have said: ‘F*** you’ to everybody and this is what we’re doing, but I also have to put the movie ahead of my own ego.” Speaking of egos, more extracts from Steven Tyler’s autobiography reach us. Musing on his feminine side, the longhaired Aerosmith singer, left, says: “My feelings are akin to puella eternis (Latin for the eternal girl”. As for his relationship with women, he reveals that he made groupies have a shower before he met them: “I liked my pulchritude pristine! I can’t kiss a girl that’s been stage-diving with 500 other guys. “ Who can? In other rock star news, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson has shared his views on social networking. “I can’t even see the reason for it,”he tells Absolute Radio. “I’ve got an envelope and a stamp and a post box.” Warming to his theme, Johnson then expressed his thoughts on people tweeting: “Who gives a f***? I don’t care. F*** off and die.”He also revealed he likes David Cameron.
Picking up an honourary degree and addressing 5,000 students was enough to make Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington a bit nervous yesterday. Washington admitted to the crowd at the University of Pennsylvania that he was worried he would “make a fool”of himself. Then, in a line straight out of a cheesy Hollywood movie, he told students they need to “have the guts to fail”, adding: “If you don’t fail, you’re not even trying.”
