iBet: Don’t expect England Under-21s to win European Championship
European Under-21 Championship, 11th June- 25th June
Lay England at 4.4-1 with Betfair
England are not without all hope in the eight team Under-21 Euro Championship, but they look a lay at 4-1. The only reason they are second favourites is because they are England – it’s not a price based on form.
If we look at their qualification, they didn’t even win their group, finishing second to Greece. However, the odd qualification system for this competition means winning your group does not guarantee you a place in the finals and indeed while England scraped past Romania 2-1, Greece bombed 5-0 to goal machines Czech Republic (25 goals in qualifying), and went out.
They are also missing some key players like Kieran Gibbs, Jack Wilshere, Andy Carroll and Micah Richards. In fact the whole market is a bid odd because 2-1 favourites Spain didn’t win their group either, and of the eight teams involved I fancy the Group B top seeds the Czech Republic (5.8 to 1 with Betfair) the most. As both Spain and the Czechs are in England’s group, we face a real uphill task to qualify for the latter stages let alone win it. England kick off their campaign against Spain on Sunday and they are outsiders for that game.
