Caught & Social: Grey power on the Isle of Wight
Veteran artists led the charge at the weekend’s Isle of Wight festival, which marked the start of festival season in the UK. Seasick Steve (70 this year), Jeff Beck,66, and Jarvis Cocker, 47, all pulled in the crowds, while the irrepressible Iggy Pop, 64, went one further, pulling the crowd up for a stage invasion. Oldest of all was Tom Jones, 71, who was full of praise for young singers and reality shows. “There’s a lot of great young singers around, which is always great,”he told Absolute Radio. “I love watching talent shows to see what’s coming and what they’re like.” Soaking up the atmosphere, meanwhile was Kate Moss, a veteran supermodel at 37, who was using the festival to enjoy her hen party ahead of her wedding this summer.
Scene & heard
“Being an icon is my dream,”says Beyoncé Knowles in an admirably modest interview with Dazed and Confused. “It has a lot of responsibilities. I feel like every time I take a picture and every time I perform on stage, I am conscious of my legacy. I’m conscious of the fact it’s going to be around even when I’m not… There are certain things that I just couldn’t do because I’ve worked so hard for my legacy and my career. Probably harder than anyone I know. So I respect it and I take it very seriously.”Such a relief, we’re sure you agree. Disagreeing with her, it seems, is Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who tells The Mail on Sunday: “Legacy is a stupid thing! I don’t want a legacy… I want a malaria vaccine.” Jodie Foster on Mel Gibson: “He’s the most loved actor I’ve ever worked with on anything… it’s because he’s kind, he’s a great communicator and not at all full of himself.” This is the same Gibson who, in 2006, racially abused a policeman and claimed: “I own Malibu.”
Fans have a ball, despite the rain
Thousands of fans braved the rain to head to Wembley for the unfortunately-named (as it turned out) Capital FM Summertime Ball. Jennifer Lopez topped the bill, supported by, among others, Nicole Scherzinger and the well-insulated Cee Lo Green. The show was hit with problems before it even started, when singer Jessie J fell off a platform during rehearsals and was taken to hospital after tearing a ligament in her foot, leaving it (in her own words), “three times”its normal size.Tagged in: Beyoncé Knowles, Capital FM Summertime Ball, celebrity gossip, Iggy Pop, isle of wight festival, Jarvis Cocker, jeff Beck, Jennifer Lopez, Jessie J, Seasick Steve
