Online House Hunter: Homes in Putney
THERE seems to be something to suit every taste in the popular London suburb of Putney, SW15. Whether you are looking for a luxury home for sale beside the river at Putney Bridge or a one-bedroom flat to rent in Putney central, this area offers a wide variety of choice.
It’s easy to see why this part of London is favoured by those seeking a short-term let, or deciding to settle down here with their family. It’s close to London with easy bus, tube or road links to the centre and other parts of the capital, but retains a real sense of community.
Putney – featured in our area spotlight – comes under the Conservative-controlled borough of Wandsworth. Despite its proximity to the centre of London, it has a surprising number of open spaces either in the borough itself or just a short walk away. Included in the borough is part of the Wimbledon and Putney Commons – 460 hectares of remarkable woodland, heathland, scrubland and recreational area. Be aware that living in the Commons area will mean a slightly higher council tax – a levy charged for the upkeep of the Commons. Surely, money well spent. Other open spaces include Battersea Park, King George’s Park, Wandsworth Park and many more.
According to the Land Registry, the average house price in Wandsworth in May 2011 was £388,382. This was a 3.5 per cent increase on the previous year and a 0.6 per cent increase on the previous month. The community website, Putneysw15.com and The Wandsworth Guardian’s website offer more detailed property breakdowns. The Guardian includes a street-by-street analysis of sales prices. Just bear in mind that the smaller the number of houses included in a sample reduces the validity of any average.
Starting at the top-end of the market, there is this four-bedroom penthouse suite for sale in Putney at £3,950,000. The Putney Wharf penthouse is set over three floors with, of course, dramatic views over London.
Those looking for period homes will find no shortage among the Victorian streets of Putney. This three-bedroom house for sale in Putney is on the market for £685,000 and is a short walk to East Putney tube or the mainline station.
Many of the large Victorian houses in the area have been converted to smaller apartments or flats. Renting a flat in Putney offers you the chance to explore the area ahead of committing yourself, or saving for, a mortgage. London has seen a strong revival of the lettings market in recent months but examples such as this Putney studio flat to let for £350 per week can be found on our search engine.
Wandsworth Borough Council includes advice for those moving into the area and I’ve included some links below which will make your transition to SW15 as stress-free as possible.
