Too late now
Gordon Brown’s speech in the House of Commons yesterday started well:
It is a bit like the old days for me, with the Government on the run, the Opposition in pursuit and a headline in The Sun saying, “Brown wrong”, another example of my very close relationship with News International.
And ended badly:
I have set out the record of my desire to have a judicial inquiry. It was opposed by the police, opposed by the Home Office and opposed by the civil service, and it was not supported by the Select Committee of the day.
We know all the good reasons why his advisers and the civil service might have advised against it. But they advise and he decided. It is no use now complaining about his own decision.
