Caught & Social: Beckham prizes athlete award
The Do Something Awards celebrate hardworking young people who have done something good for the world. They also give prizes to a lot of smiling celebrities, which is why David Beckham was presented with the athlete award by his expat pal Gordon Ramsay. The “singer”award went to spontaneous scream inducer Justin Bieber, who was spotted hanging out with comic Will Ferrell backstage, perhaps explaining the secrets of his success.
Scene & heard
Andy Serkis went “method” when preparing to play Caesar the chimp in the new Rise of the Planet of the Apes. “It did slip into everyday life,”he told The Sun. “When we were filming in Vancouver, I used to run round Stanley Park. I would start off as myself but then start getting into character a bit, spending the route back as Caesar, on all fours, then on two feet…”
Jay-Z’s modesty extends to his other half, Beyoncé, whom he has compared to the late Michael Jackson: “What I’ve learnt from her is similar to what I learnt from [Jackson],”he said. “I know that’s blasphemy to compare the two because Mike was such an innovator – but I think she’s like the second coming.”
Fellow rapper Game has fallen foul of the law after offering an internship on Twitter. Telling fans to phone to apply to work with him, he then posted the number of a police station. Mr Game has blamed a friend for the act, but the LA County Sheriff’s Department says “the investigation continues”.
Big return of Big Brother
Whether you like it or not, Celebrity Big Brother is coming back. And it’s bringing with the now customary collection of waifs, strays and oddballs from the world of celebrity. Presented by the pregnant Emma Willis, pictured, rumoured contestants on the new series, which is now on the highbrow Channel 5, range from international music stars such as Jedward and Kerry Katona to the eye candy of Pamela Anderson and Sally Bercow. Yesterday the doors to the famous house in Hertfordshire were flung open to the press to see what delights/instruments of torture await the contestants.
Birdie time for McIlroy
After injuring his wrist at the US PGA tournament in Atlanta last week, golf prodigy Rory McIlroy turned his attention to another sport yesterday – tennis. The US Open champion was at the Western and Southern Open in Ohio to catch up with his Danish tennis playing girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki. Let’s hope Rory learns to relax when he’s with Caroline – by playing less golf.
To Kate and Matt, a son, @Bingham
Regular readers will know that it is de rigueur these days for stars to post pictures of a new child on Twitter. Muse front man Matt Bellamy followed the trend with this picture of Kate Hudson and their son Bingham Hawn Bellamy, with the caption “Family life!”.

“There is a tweet for me but I don’t do it myself. Tweeting is like being your own personal stalker. It’s just really odd, I don’t see the value in it” Says Annie Lennox. You can follow her (or someone writing as her) @AnnieLennox
“That’s the only reason I don’t have a six-pack, I think it’s important we see proper human form rather than these masquerading bronzed statues” Chris O’Dowd kept it real for his sex scene in Bridesmaids
