Stoke’s 4-0 defeat at the hands of Sunderland was completely out of character and may have been down to tiredness following their European exertions. It came just three days after they had to work hard for a 1-1 draw in Kiev. Normally they are a very tight defensive unit. This is borne out by the fact that after six Premier League games they have only conceded six goals and four of them came in the Sunderland game. No-one can better than statistic. However, they don’t score many, and indeed only West Bromwich Albion have notched fewer Premiership goals than Stoke’s four. They are averaging just 1.66 goals per game – the lowest figure in the top flight. Most importantly Tony Pulis has them taking the Europa Cup seriously and they will field a full strength team – and I believe they have a real chance of going deep into the competition. They won’t find it a walk in the park against Besiktas though, who themselves have conceded only four times in four games in the Turkish top flight. This has all the hallmarks of a low scoring encounter.
