Period properties abound in Battersea

BATTERSEA has one of the lowest council tax rates in London which, in itself, would make it a desirable place to live. But it’s just as likely people move there for the easy access to central London, delightful Victorian Streets, open spaces, riverside location or many of the other positives about this part of south London.

The range of properties stretch from council houses and flats to luxury mansions but it’s the modernised flats inside period properties which probably epitomise this part of London. The area took its hit during the 2008 property crash along with everywhere else but has quickly recovered to its previous 2007 highs. The Land Registry put the average price of property in the Borough of Wandsworth at £394,144 (September 2011).

The period properties have the character and charm but be aware of whether the house you seek is in a conservation area or is listed. Such properties can have restrictions that might thwart plans for expansion or modernisation. Modern homes or those newly-refurbished interiors of period properties offer a range of styles and choices.

Those seeking a one-bedroom property for sale in Battersea, for example, will find this smart-looking one-bedroom flat encased in an evocative Victorian School building. It offers the best of both worlds: a connection with the area’s rich history and the comforts of a modern accommodation. It is on the market for £395,000.

Hunt for a two-bedroom property for sale in Battersea and you’ll find properties such as this flat in Queenstown Road (pictured above), part of the tree-lined Diamond Conservation area. It is on the first floor of the house and is on the market for £359,950.

If you’re seeking a house rather than just a flat, then the Independent Property search includes a wide range for sale. The Shaftesbury Estate is one of the more sought-after areas and among the two-bedroom houses for sale in Battersea is a Shaftesbury Cottage in Kingsley Street. The exposed chimney breast is a superb focal point for the lounge and the stripped floorboards show off the best of its old and contemporary style. It is on the market for £540,000.

The Independent property guide offers selections of two, three, four of even five and more bedroom properties for sale in the Battersea area.
