Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig at the Odeon Leicester Square

Hollywood’s version of the cult Swedish crime thriller The Girl With TheDragon Tattoo had its premiere in London last night. The second filmadaptation of the late Stieg Larsson’s bestselling novel stars Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander – the dysfunctional, tattooed computer wizard of the title –with Daniel Craig as crusading journalist Mikael Blomkvist. The director David Fincher made Mara work for the role, she said. “I went into training, Idid skateboarding to sort of get the teenage boy walk and a lot of kick-boxing,”she recalled. “I started the dialect training right away and did some computertraining.” Well, if the acting dries up…

Honking for the new Holmes

Jude Law and Robert Downey Jnr were posing in a vintage car outside Claridge’s hotel in London yesterday. But the occasion wasn’t simply a boys’ day out, as they were back in the saddle as Dr Watson and Sherlock Holmes, respectively, to promote the latest instalment of the franchise, A Game Of Shadows. Such is the pair’s chemistry on set, it was reported this week that they are to star in a remake of the 50s classic Some Like It Hot.
Scene & heard

Nick Frost says it wasn’t all luxury trailers on the set of Snow White And The Huntsman. In addition to having to go to“dwarf college” beforehand, it involved 3am starts, fivehour make-up sessions and 16-hour days, plus shaving his head. “Having my head shaved bald was a real drag, the star of Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead tells the Huffington Post.“Razored bald every morning. Mrs Frost, she is not a happy bunny, but nowwe’ve wrapped and I canre-grow it, and hopefully re-grow my love.”

Following the news that Tom Cruise is planning a sequel to Top Gun, herecome two more surprise follow-ups. First is Lionsgate’s plan for a remake of American Psycho, which came out in 2000,and now Steven Spielberg says he is pressing ahead with Jurassic Park 4. “I haven’t been active in thelast year because I’ve been so busy obviously on War Horse, Tintin and now I’m currently shooting Lincoln, but right now, it’s on the schedule to bring out another Jurassic Park.”

Eminently suitable for Christmas gift

The artist Tracey Emin turned shopkeeper this week as she opened a store in Spitalfields, east London. The store, Emin International, will sell her own limited-edition prints and artworks. We presume prices are a bit higher than at the shop she ran with another artist, Sarah Lucas, in 1993.

Old is new again

With the Hollywood  trend for 3D andCGI, whoever chose to finance The Artist– a new silent, black and white movie – was a brave individual. But it has already won rave reviews and judging by the producer Harvey Weinstein’s screening, it has gained a celebrity following, too. Among those at the Charlotte Street Hotel in London were Michelle Ryan, Damian Lewis and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
