More Banned List
I heard Justine Greening, the Transport Secretary, on Newsnight last night and for no reason at all, apart from “across the piece” and “going forward”, decided it was time to list the next 10 in my supplementary Banned List, which I have been compiling since the publication of the book — now available for a bargain £5.01 as a Kindle e-book.
- Flagship. How did I miss this? Thanks to Ronnie for spotting the omission.
- Flexicurity. Used by the European Council in its decision (pdf) to form a fiscal compact to try to save the euro, 9 December 2011.
- Waitlisted. Thanks to Professor Philip Cowley.
- The clue is in the title. Jim Taylor.
- Psyche. Dan Jackson nominated “the British psyche”, but why stop there?
- Massive own goal. Tom Hamilton.
- To empty-chair, as a verb. Ann Treneman.
- Sleepwalking, except to describe the unusual medical condition involving walking while asleep.
- “It is what it is.” Kenny Farquharson. To go with “We are where we are,” which is already on the list.
- Across the piece.
Do please let me have your nominations, in the comments below, or on Twitter using #BannedList.
Meanwhile, I also commend William Easterly’s collection of Aidspeak.
