Caught & Social: Stars hungry for more after the Bafta hors d’oeuvres

Like any good awards ceremony, the Orange British Academy Film awards is about much more than handing out gold gongs. It’s also about the weekend of build-up to the big day. Things started on Friday night as the Weinstein Company and Grey Goose held a pre-awards dinner at the Dean Street Townhouse.

Host Harvey Weinstein (known for throwing a good party) said he had heard Dame Judi Dench was making fun of him on Graham Norton’s show. “I can tell you something about Judi,” he told guests, including Naomi Campbell and Cuba Gooding Jr. “She’s cheating on me with Daniel Craig.”

Also playing dinner hostess was Gillian Anderson, at the WilliamVintage and Adler dinner at the St Pancras Renaissance hotel, along with Brit acting couple Rhys Ifans and Anna Friel, and Hayley Atwell. Emma Watson (pictured), surely a someday Bafta winner, was a lady in red at the Lancome film party, where fellow guests included Johnny Borrell and Tom Hiddleston. The fun didn’t end there, however, and tomorrow you can read about that other essential bit of Bafta indulgence – the after parties.

Beckham has a shot on target

After spending years being watched on the sidelines by his other half, it was David Beckham’s turn to play the supporting spouse. The pair were in New York for Victoria’s Fashion Week show. This weekend, Victoria said having a daughter meant someone to share her interests with.

“Finally there’s someone in my house who likes fashion more than Premiership football. Result!”  Her daughter, Harper Seven, is six-months old.

Scene & heard

The Oscar-winner Dustin Hoffman says that even now, actors can suffer indirect anti-semitism. “In a sense, a movie star represents a large segment of society because you want as many people as possible going to the theatre identifying with that person,” he tells the FT. “There are six billion people in the world and 17 million are Jews, so you do the math. You can’t go wrong with Brad Pitt or George Clooney, but you might be gambling if you go another way.”

Fellow film star Christina Ricci wants to be taken less seriously. “I’m a complete goof, a big kid really,” she tells the Sunday Times. “I’m always playing pranks, and I like climbing on people, making them carry me around.”

After Karl Lagerfeld criticised the singer Adele for her weight, she has now come under attack from Adrian Chiles. “To be fair, she does have terrible hair – but is beautiful,” he told his ITV show. The flawless Chiles, meanwhile, has hair and a figure to die for.
