Clegg texts Cameron to say he can finally read the small print of the coalition agreement

As a member of the Fellowship of Unnecessary Clegg Knowledge, I spotted last week that the Deputy Prime Minister has had a mini-makeover.

Brace yourselves: the Lib Dem leader has started wearing glasses. In a blink and you miss it moment, during Nick Robinson’s report on the election trail with the Cleggmeister, he gave his new spectacles their first television outing.

I’m told he has had them for a couple of months, and only needs them for reading.

He might be struggling in the polls, but maybe he could console himself with a win in this contest. First prize includes a “year’s modelling contract with top London agency”. Could make a good alternative career.

    Most people start to need magnifying glasses for reading when they reach around forty; sometimes a little earlier, or a little later if they are naturally short-sighted. It’s unusual to file even a short article about such an inevitable development, even when it involves a well-known public figure.
    I suppose, if he felt the need, Mr Chorley might have chosen the public unveiling of Clegg’s new glasses as a vehicle to showcase his talent for drollery.
    Thankfully, we’ve been spared that.
