A look at the trending topics on social networking sites and search engines today, to see what we’re interested in, and why.
Aurora / Colorado
The Denver suburb of Aurora was the site of tragedy in the early hours of this morning, after a gun attack during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. Local news station @9NEWS tweets: “CONFIRMED: minimum 10 dead, 39 transported – this just in from Aurora PD Chief Oates. #TheatreShooting”
Ramadan Mubarak
Deputy Prime Minister @nick_clegg tweets “I would like to wish everyone a sincere, ‘Ramadan Mubarak.’” He joins those using Twitter to mark the start of fasting for the Islamic month of Ramadan, which begins today. Leader of the Respect Party @SalmaYaqoob tweeted yesterday “Ramadan Mubarak! Fasting starts tomorrow – a month of blessings, sharing, feeling hunger and thirst yes, but solidarity and spirituality too.”
Batman / IMAX
Many online commentators are opting to see the new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises at the IMAX, after sound quality problems have been reported at other cinemas. It’s hard enough to understand the guttural growlings emerging from baddie Bane’s mask as it is. Twitter poet and 90s pop singer imposter @desree_life comments “I can’t wait for Batman. IMAX trickets with my man. Sneak in a G&T can. Who remembers Supergran?”
Lord Coe
The London 2012 chief has hit back at Olympics grumblers (if there was a gold medal for whinging, Britain would be a shoo-in). @DaveCamm tweets “As Sebastian said on the wireless this morning, you sure can’t wear a Pepsi t-shirt to the Olympics. He’s now rebranded as Lord Coe-Ca-Cola.”
