New ‘Doctor Who’ series 7 trailer unveiled
Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. Daleks both vintage and new-age, dinosaurs on space ships and weeping angels, it can only mean one thing: the countdown to series 7 of Doctor Who has begun.
The latest trailer for series 7 of Doctor Who was released online today signalling the imminent return of the Time Lord (Matt Smith). The last trailer premiered back in March and offered fans a glimpse the next series, however this time there was a more complete picture of what is to come.
So what can we expect? At the start of the trailer we find the Doctor and his companions in trouble again and surrounded by space ships. What has he done this time to incur the collective wrath of the universe? He seems to have also fallen out with some smart alec robots who look like they will be a lot of fun to watch, particularly when they say to the Doctor: ‘We’re very cross with you’.
As promised by Showrunner Steven Moffat, there will be an episode featuring the most Daleks ever. Judging by the footage it looks like there are Daleks from all the ages of Who not just the latest generation as imagined by Mark Gatiss. This seems to be a small hint that this series will be weaving in elements from the past 50 years of Doctor Who, so perhaps fans should keep their eyes peeled.
River Song (Alex Kingston) will be turning up again for more fun while viewers get a shot of Sherlock star Rupert Graves as a sort of explorer. The audience is shown an ancient Egyptian woman who appears to be Queen Nefertiti (Riann Steele). Have things fallen out of time again given that there are dinosaurs running around in space?
There is also a brief shot of David Bradley who played Argus Filch in the Harry Potter films. From the trailer it’s hard to discern what his role is but he is not the only one from the Harry Potter alumni to appear in the show, Mark Williams was seen in the first trailer running across a beach with the Doctor.
The show is keeping its American appeal with the Wild West episode and a shot of Times Square in New York where the Ponds will have their last adventure with the Doctor. Moffat has said that Rory (Arthur Darvill) and Amy (Karen Gillan) will meet their end at the hands of the Weeping Angels. Have we been given a glimpse of how the Ponds meet their demise? After all the Doctor is seen carrying a limp Amy in his arms…
There’s a taste of darker things to come with the Doctor ranting to Amy about honouring the victims of his mercy and there is a mention of the Master which begs the question of whether or not he will be making an appearance. If the answer is yes, then who will be playing him this time around? John Simm did a brilliant job as the nemesis to David Tennant’s Doctor so it will be interesting to see a new Master for Smith’s Doctor.
The whole trailer maintains a slick and sexy look that could rival a motion picture. For those asking about a Doctor Who film there is no need for one because each series gives audiences more Who than a single film ever could.
‘Doctor Who’ will be returning in the autumn.
