Oooh, we’re excited! Britain’s (hopefully) golden girl starts her heptathalon today. The hotly-tipped Sheffield-born athelete has become face of TeamGB, and according to hurdle champion @DaiGreene, she’s not only popular at home: “Fulfilling my captain duties today at the warm up track. A foreign athlete asked me to take a picture of her with @J_Ennis.”

The athletics events start at London2012 today. Stratford is expected to be busier than ever, excitment is in the air, and absolutely anything could happen, as @TommyB89 reminds us: “The only way Bradley Wiggins isn’t going to win Sports Personality of the year is if the Queen turns up at the 100m and beats Usain Bolt.” You can keep up with all the events with The Independent’s schedule here.

One of the few, non-London2012-themed trending topics today is this hashtag allowing room for dissenting views on the universally popular likes of #YOLO, chocolate ice cream and The Only Way is Essex. So far, no one’s been brave enough to mention Justin Bieber or, for that matter, the Olympics.

Barely a week passes without one banking scandal or another making headlines. Today it’s the Royal Bank of Scotland’s turn to trend. The 80 per cent state-owned bank annouced it had racked up over £300 million charges added to a previously unveiled pre-tax loss of £1.5 billion. The star of Channel 4’s Bank of Dave @FishwickDavid tweets, “Incredible that RBS have lost Billions again! I’m going to send him my book. Do you think I should offer to help Stephen Hester?#bankofdave“
