MPs / Louise Mensch / Tory
The surprise announcement that Conservative MP Louise Mensch is resigning her seat in Parliament has got Twitter musing on the career / family ‘balancing act’ for MPs in particular and women in general. @sallybercow tweets: “Yes women can be mums & MPs! But with transatlantic marriage too something has to give. Ludicrous to say @louisemensch being ‘unfeminist’!!
#WhatIHopeTheyFindOnMars / NASA
NASA have successfully landed a £1.6 billion one-ton robot rover on Mars, to search for evidence that the planet once supported life. But what else might they find? @beetjeff has his/her fingers crossed for a “rad mayan skatepark” while @marlespo is hoping for “All those dads that went to the shop for cigarettes 20 years ago and never came back.”
Usain Bolt / Jamaican
Fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt did his bit to celebrate 50 years of Jamaican independence yesterday when he clocked the second fastest time in history in the Men’s 100 metre finals last night. @usainbolt retweets @richardbranson’s comment “Unbelievable Usain! Surely the greatest ever. Congratulations to Jamaica, look forward to celebrating when I’m next there.”
Hiroshima
Today marks the 67th anniversary of the dropping of an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. As Phil Strongman writes in The Independent today, the reverberations of the event are still felt. @GreenpeaceUK tweets ”Do you want a world without nuclear weapons? We do. #hiroshima #hiroshimaday”
