NASA have successfully landed a £1.6 billion one-ton robot rover on Mars, to search for evidence that the planet once supported life. Usain Bolt / Jamaican

Fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt did his bit to celebrate 50 years of Jamaican independence yesterday when he clocked the second fastest time in history in the Men’s 100 metre finals last night. @usainbolt retweets @richardbranson’s comment “Unbelievable Usain! Surely the greatest ever. Congratulations to Jamaica, look forward to celebrating when I’m next there.”

Hiroshima

Today marks the 67th anniversary of the dropping of an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. As Phil Strongman writes in The Independent today, the reverberations of the event are still felt. @GreenpeaceUK tweets ”Do you want a world without nuclear weapons? We do. #hiroshima #hiroshimaday”
