#C4paralympics
As well as all the excitement of televised sport, the paralympics has brought up issues around how we discuss disability. In yesterday’s i, Archie Bland warns us not to patronise, while in today’s Independent Alex Brooker says the important thing is that we just discuss it. @Edwina_Currie briefly trended thanks to this bizarre comment: “Italians are gorgeous even in wheelchairs. Love ‘em.” Hmmmm.
London Met
More than 2,000 students could face ejection from the country after the Government stripped London Metropolitan University of its right to admit foreigners. @stavvers says “What London Met needs to do now is turn round and say ‘nah, you’re not deporting these people’ and put them up safely.”
Cheryl Cole
The non-news story of the day is that Cheryl Cole and her non-boyfriend Will-i-am have been not-very-badly injured in a not-that-serious car accident. @CherylCole reassured her fans: “Don’t worry me and @iamwill are fine, promise x”
Hannah Russell
TeamGB paralympic swimmer Hannah Russell has set a new British record in her heat. The 16-year-old swam 5 seconds faster than Spain’s Deborah Font who took second place. @SusanPopoola says “Noticed that Hannah Russell (Paralympics Swimmer) referred to her visual impairment as a Limitation rather than a Disability.”
