Andy Murray won the US Open last night. He hasn’t tweeted about it yet.

Boris Johnson

An unofficial campaign to make Boris Johnson Prime Minister has sprung up on Twitter, following his speech yesterday at the Athletes’ Parade, where he addressed the cheering crowds, saying: “I will say to all of you, my God there’s a lot of you! This was your achievement!” Not everyone approves of the wave of goodwill towards the Mayor of London, who once compared his chances of being elected PM to “the chances of finding Elvis on Mars, or my being reincarnated as an olive.” Moshi Moshi DJs tweets: “If you want Boris Johnson for PM cos you find him funny please do me a favour and remove yourself from the gene pool asap, cheers.”

TUC, #TUC12

The annual Trade Union Congress’s annual Conference is taking place in Brighton this year, and has opened once again to talk of industrial action. Our journalist, Steve Richards points out the myriad other issues that could have been brought into the spotlight in his column today. Meanwhile, Twitter is abuzz with the news that T-shirts (like this one) celebrating the death of Margaret Thatcher are on sale at the event. The T-Shirts say a range of slogans including “Hey ho the witch is dead” and “a generation of trade unions will dance on Thatcher’s grave”. According to this report from The Telegraph, £2 from each T-shirt sold goes towards the Derbyshire Unemployed Workers Centre.

I am intrigued by the moniker Derbyshire Unemployed Workers Centre. Surely those producing the controversial T-shirts for profit are by virtue of that fact employed. Not to put too fine a point on it, they are capitalists in the making; if not fat cats, well-covered kittens, and a glowing example of the sort of enterprise of which The Blessed Margaret would have wholeheartedly approved? More power to their plutocratic elbows.
