CCTV

More than 200 UK schools are using CCTV in toilets or changing rooms, according to a Freedom of Information request by  Big Brother Watch, the civil liberties group.  It  observed in the report that this is only the tip of the iceberg, as it found there are more than 100,000 CCTV cameras in other areas of secondary schools and academies across England, Wales and Scotland.

#ESM

ESM stands for the ‘European Stability Mechanism’, which will be a €190bn rescue fund for the Eurozone. It’s trending because Germany’s Constitutional Court has just rejected a petition to stop it from being created. The FT says: “The ruling is a boon for Angela Merkel, German chancellor, who has championed the twin approach of bailouts and budgetary discipline”. The Euro rose in value after the decision, because it as seen as a way to help protect the Eurozone from further financial difficulty.

Gove, GCSEs

Michael Gove, the Education Secretary, has come under intense criticism because, unlike his Welsh counterpart,  he has decided not to regrade English GCSE papers that were awarded lower than expected grades. Yesterday, Leighton Andrews, the Welsh Education Minister, ordered  GCSE English papers taken in Welsh schools to be regraded. This is likely to result in higher grades awarded to Welsh students.

Gove encouraged Andrews to “think again” saying he had made a “regrettable political intervention”, as he spoke before a Commons education select committee today.
