No more foie gras for their Lordships

In the Barry Room in the House of Lords, where the ceiling is immensely high and the décor is elaborate enough to bring on a migraine, a regular delicacy on the menu, traditionally, was foie gras, at £7.50. Not any more.

Foie gras offends people who care about animal welfare because it is produced by force feeding ducks and geese until their livers swell to 10 times their normal size. Its production is illegal in the UK but sale and consumption is not, though there are a good many people, including Prince Charles, who will not eat it.

After much lobbying by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the House of Lords Catering Department has agreed that no more foie gras will be served on the premises.

“We are delighted that the House of Lords will join the House of Commons in taking a stand against cruelty and removing this most un-British of products from its menus,” says PETA Associate Director Mimi Bekhechi.
