A Tory dilemma: should they try to unseat Jeremy Browne?
One of Grant Shapps’s dilemmas as he draws up his election plans is whether to target Taunton Deane, in Somerset, as a potential Tory gain. The Lib Dems held the seat in 2010 by only 3,993 votes, meaning that the Tories could take it on a swing of less than 3.5 per cent. On the other hand, the incumbent is the Home Office minister Jeremy Browne, one of the Tories’ favourite Lib Dems, whose opponent last time was a maverick neo-Thatcherite. But Shapps, who is greedy for every seat his party can get, is in favour of going for it anyway. On Browne, he has been heard to say – not altogether seriously: “We don’t let people as right-wing as him into the party.”Tagged in: dilemma, Grant Shapps, Taunton Deane, tory
