Aidan Burley has not enjoyed uninterrupted success during his three years as Tory MP for Cannock Chase. He is still waiting to hear from the French authorities over the Nazi-themed stag party in the ski resort of Val Thorens, in which he took part, which could result in criminal proceedings. His tweet denouncing the Olympics opening ceremony as “multicultural crap” was disowned by David Cameron. But he can take comfort in that his local party activists still think he is the right man for Cannock Chase. They have reselected to be their candidate at the next general election.

Aiden Burley was old enough to have known better when he took part in that Nazi-themed stag party in the ski resort of Val Thorens. Ed Balls was little more than a callow youth, a student at Oxford when he dressed up in Nazi officer’s uniform for an all-male Steamers Society rave-up, so perhaps due allowance should be made for his indiscretion. Although surely anyone of sensibility must have had qualms donning garb associated with brutal herders of defenceless millions into cattle trucks and gas chambers. And left-wing journos are rarely so tolerant of the restaurant-wrecking antics of Bullingdon Clubbers Dave and George and Boris at around the same age. It is a puzzlement.

Not really. By the time you reach university you ought to know that criminal damage is illegal. Dressing up in Nazi uniform, however inappropriate and unwise it might be, is not illegal (in this country).
