This jibe that only the Lib Dems could have a sex scandal with no sex is so unfair
People are saying cruelly, a propos the Lord Rennard affair, that only the Liberal Democrats could have a sex scandal with no sex. This is simply not true. The Tories have a line in sexless sex scandals, such as the 24-day unconsummated marriage of Lord Taylor of Warwick to Yvonne Louise, a US estate agent, which ended when she concluded that he was not interested in anything except money. She complained that she had spent their honeymoon sleeping on the sofa in the Disneyland Paris Sleeping Beauty suite, wearing her her coat, trousers, boots and gloves to keep warm. He was later jailed for fiddling his expenses, but is back in the Lords now.
In 1994, Hartley Booth, the man who had followed Margaret Thatcher as MP for Finchley, resigned from his government post after it was revealed that he had been sending seriously bad love poetry to a 22 year old researcher. “There has been no sex involved,” the chairman of the Finchley Conservative Association said at the time.
And the last but one by-election in Eastleigh, in 1994, it was caused by a Tory MP being found dead by his housekeeper, dressed only in stockings and suspenders with a black bin liner over his head and his neck in a noose – a sex scandal with no sex if ever there was one.
To suggest that sexless sex scandals are a Liberal Democrats specialty is very unfair on the Tories.Tagged in: liberal democrats, Lord Rennard, sex
