iBet: Expect goals at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Real Madrid
Champions League, last 16 second leg
Manchester United v Real Madrid, kick off 7.45pm, ITV1
Back over 2.5 goals at 4/6 with Betfair
This is a must-watch fixture but from a betting viewpoint the result is very hard to call. My gut instinct has been telling me for a while that Real Madrid will have too much for Alex Ferguson’s men, but they didn’t in the first leg and there are statistics that suggest Manchester United will prevail. Perhaps the most compelling of these is that out of the last 12 times last 16 Champions League ties have finished 1-1 after the first leg, the second leg has been won by the home team on ten occasions. Of course Madrid are not a normal team, and they will be super-confident after back to back wins over Barcelona. Perhaps the best route is to expect goals. The last two times these teams have met at Old Trafford have produced 12 goals and history tells us that second legs of Champions League games tend to be high scoring. You can back over 2.5 goals at around 4/6 with Betfair (4/7 elsewhere) and that looks a fair price.
Arsenal are now as big as 9/4 for a top four finish this year (Stan James) with Gareth Bale backed into 1/2 favourite for PFA Player of the Year (BetVictor) following Spurs’ 2-1 win in the North London derby on Sunday.
