iBet: We are in for a few surprises in the early races
Formula 1, Australian Grand Prix
Lay Sebastian Vettel at 2.9/1 with Betfair
Back Jason Button to finish in the top three at 11/8 (Bet365)
The new Formula One season gets going in the early hours of tomorrow with practice at Melbourne and if last season is any guide we are in for a few surprises in the early races. In fact three were seven different winners of the first seven races last season, and the tire situation adds a new element of uncertainty into the mix. Pirelli are supplying all the teams again and Barcelona testing suggested they start to grain quickly – although it will be much hotter in Australia. Pirelli have chosen to supply the supersoft and medium compounds for this race – the first time the softest have been chosen – so it’s no surprise teams really don’t know what to expect. Throw in the possibility of rain and it all suggests that this is not time to be taking short prices about favourites, and for that reason I make Sebastian Vettel a small stakes lay.

I also think McLaren’s Jenson Button may be value to finish on the podium. Jenson is the only driver who seems publicly reasonably happy with the tire situation and if there is one driver out there who can bring it home when the tires are degrading it’s the Englishman.
