iBet: England may open up in second half against San Marino

Gareth Purnell

World Cup Qualifier

San Marino V England, kick off 8pm

Back the second half to produce the most goals at 10/11

San Marino have never won a competitive fixture – their only win came in a friendly in 2004 – and to get any sort of price about England you have to be backing the away side to win by more than four goals. I did that when they played at Wembley in October and it was more nervy than I expected, with England having to wait until the 35th minute until Rooney opened the scoring, somewhat luckily. Against Montenegro in a 6-0 defeat the first goal game after 24 minutes, against Moldova in the 72nd minute and only when Montenegro won 3-0 at home did the second half not produce more goals than the first. It suggests that San Marino are a bit more organised than they used to be but tire against superior possession as the game wears on, and I think backing the second half to produce the most goals at close to even money is the best option in a game where value bets are hard to come by.

Advices

England’s biggest wins were 10-0 scorelines against Portugal in 1947 and USA in 1964 and Oddschecker.com tell me that they are 50-1 to repeat that scoreline and 22-1 to come from behind to win, as they did against San Marino in 1993. In three previous meetings England have scored 18 goals against San Marino’s one, and the home side are 170/1 to win and 15/2 to trouble the scorer tonight.
