Start Friday with a bang: The sounds of X-Press 2
X-Press 2 have been an integral part of UK club culture for decades, their knack for getting dancefloors throbbing to slabs of indulgent house earning them a reputation as one of house’s premier production and DJing duos.
This weekend, DJ Rocky and DJ Diesel are playing at Ritual, a new London club night in Chelsea. If we’re being honest, the well-heeled, silk lined pocket of SW3 is the last place you’d expect to see a queue of people snaking up around the block to dance all night to thumping electronic music, but with a host of new exciting parties springing up there, perhaps it’s the new Dalston?
Regardless of whether the organic cafes will soon be replaced by Turkish pool halls or the rah set suddenly develops a penchant for looking like they’ve just fallen out of a dressing up box marked 1996, Chelsea is suddenly becoming an option for a wild night out (one that doesn’t involve chinos, minor members of the Royal Family or bar tabs with more than three zeros).
Rocky revealed why he’s so excited about this weekend’s event, which will also see Prins Thomas, Hot Since 82 and Lumi take turns behind the deck. Of the mix, he says: “It’s a good representation of our club sound right now with a few of our new bits thrown in for good measure; tracky house music.”
Are you looking forward to Ritual?
Yes, definitely. It’s always great to play in your home town.
Do you think Chelsea could become the new East London?
It would be great if it was, it would definitely save the three-hour round trip every time you want to go out! (I’m based in SW London.)
In your opinion, what is the best underground club in the UK?
That’s an easy one. It’s Riffraff in Middlesbrough.
What have you got coming up?
We’ve got loads of new music coming out over the next couple of months. We have a collaboration out now on Steve Bug’s Audiomatique label. We did it with Werner Neidermeier and Gareth Whitehead. We also have releases coming on 1Trax and a couple of EPs for Skint. We also do the weekly radio show for Ministry of Sound radio. We’ve recently started doing the shows ‘live’ on Thursday nights between 7-9pm, broadcasting from the main room at Ministry. And we’ve got plenty of interesting gigs/parties coming up, as well as Ritual.
What’s the most rock n roll thing you guys have ever done?
The private jet was pretty rock n roll. (I must add, it was Tiesto’s and we just hitched a lift.)
What 5 songs inspired you to become DJs?
1 – Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force – Planet Rock
2 – Double Dee & Steinski – Lessons 1-3
3 – Bad Bascombe – Black Grass Music
4 – The Boogie Boys – Break Dancer
5 – James Brown – Funky Drummer
What track is your top tip for the summer?
Much as it pains me to say it, that Daft Punk record.
What producers or artists are you really excited about at the moment?
Of Norway. Maertz.
