iBet: Stosur looks value in unpredictable ladies French Open
French Open Tennis, Roland Garos
Back Sam Stosur at 33/1 with Betfair
The women’s tournament at Roland Garos is not as cut and dried as the men’s (Nadal has won seven of the last eight) and that presents an opportunity to look for a bit of value. The favourite is world number one Serena Williams, who has been in top gear already this year. However, she was also favourite last year when she lost in the first round and 8/11 about a 31-year-old on a punishing clay surface cannot be considered good value.
In fact, given that she’s not won this since 2002 (her only French Open triumph) there is a strong argument to say she’s a ‘lay’ at 1.8 with Betfair. The unpredictability of this tournament can be highlighted by the fact there have been six different winners of the last six tournaments. Last year Ibet followers backed Maria Sharapova at 9/1 and 9/2 and she delivered, crushing Sara Errani in the final 6-2, 6-3. The Russian goes off at 5/1 this year.
One possible alternative is Sam Stosur. The Australian knows how to win a ‘slam’ – she dismantled Williams at Flushing Meadows a couple of years ago – and she has made the final here before, going down 6-4, 7-6 to Francesca Schiavone in 2010 and beating Williams in the quarters. She also made the semi finals last year and in 2009 and although her draw looks pretty tough, 28/1 looks decent value.
