Children’s Book Blog: Recommended read – Little Red Riding Hood app by Nosy Crow
Little Red Riding Hood visits her grandmother only to discover what big eyes, ears and teeth she suddenly seems to have. So far, so Grimm – but how Little Red gets to grandma’s house and defeats the Big Bad Wolf is in the reader’s hands.
Who’s it for?
Three to eight-year-olds (though parents and older siblings will probably find themselves having a sneaky go to when no one’s looking).
Why should I read it?
Because it’s quite possibly the best children’s story app out there right now. Not only is it fun to play and wittily illustrated – the Big Bad Wolf wears a flat cap and checked trousers, Little Red Riding Hood’s mum sports Nigella-esque curves – but it also works as a genuine reading aid. Each word in the story is highlighted on-screen as a child’s voice reads each sentence out loud.
You can also click on various characters and objects to make them say and do different things. But what will have you coming back to this app again and again is the fact that you can influence the way the story turns out by choosing different paths along the way and playing a selection of games. Some of these games are really quite inventive – you have to use your phone’s microphone to blow dandelions or a whistle, or tilt your phone to pour honey into a jar.
Small children will also love seeing their face appear in the magic pond (as captured by your phone’s camera). Don’t worry though, the Big Bad Wolf always gets his just desserts in the end – it’s just how you scare him away that changes. I recommend the spiders…
Best character: The Big Bad Wolf for those spiffy checked trousers.
Best line: ‘I don’t like spiders!’ (Who knew the Big Bad Wolf was an arachnophobe?)
If I like this, what other books might I like?
