Dish of the Day: EatPlayLove 2013
A few years ago I worked in a restaurant that also ran a cafe, where we made sandwiches fresh every morning. At the end of the day, we’d always have leftovers and throwing them away was soul destroying.
I contacted various shelters and charities nearby and the hassle it would have been to provide people who had no food, some food, was unbelievable. If one did manage to transport them, there was the issue of ‘What happens if they get sick?’. I felt like screaming ‘They have no food!’
We make our sandwiches fresh daily, yet there was a perceived risk that prevented us from ever using the sandwiches for anything other than staff food. This always left a bitter taste and increased my desire to help these people, and fast forward a few years that’s exactly what I’m planning to do.
Enter EatPlayLove, a day filled with some of the country’s best chefs, live music and magic performers, all coming together to raise money for The Manna Society and Galvin’s Chance, two charities that are close to our hearts. Founded by David & Nicole Williams, together with yours truly, we hope that we can make a small difference to the lives of people who have no food and no roof above their heads, and also to the wonderful scheme that gives disadvantaged kids a second chance, to learn some discipline, learn a skill and ultimately a chance to prove they can achieve something.
What’s truly inspiring is that through social media, work, friends and family, the people who have offered their help is hugely humbling. Whether it be donations to an auction, help on the day, produce to cook with or simply buying a ticket, it’s hard to put into words how that makes me feel. We hope we will raise over £20,000 for them, and if its a success, I can’t wait to raise more.
