Has everyone noticed how tout le monde is going nuts for coconuts? There’s RiRi smiling bright like a diamond fronting the campaign for Vita Coco, while Elton John is co-owner of the cool-as-you-like Jax Coco, the designer bottle much loved by the likes of Liz Hurley and Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

Why the big deal you may ask? That’s simple. The natural juice is good for you. More than that, coconut water is regarded as one of the liquid super foods. It’s bursting with essential electrolytes including magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, potassium and calcium, plus it’s low in calories, coming in at around under 50 calories for a 200ml glass – that’s less than a glass of orange juice.

But the best bit is, it’s delicious and rather strangely, tastes nothing like coconut at all – it’s smooth, naturally sweet and creamy but fresh, clear and pretty much fat-free making it perfect for drinking after exercise (that’s where those electrolytes come in).

Mind you, if you want to crank it up in the fun department, coconut water makes a wonderful mixer. Try it as a natural accompaniment to rum or even gin. If that whets your whistle, why stop there? Go mad and try one of the many spirits which are popping up with coconut at the core.

Mahiki Coconut is one. Launched earlier this year by the team behind Mahiki nightclub in London, it’s a blend of Caribbean rum and coconut. Add it to Coco Cola, pineapple juice, ginger beer or use it as a booster in your Pina Colada or Mojito.

This week the latest addition to the coconut clan arrived on our desks – Stoli Chocolat Kokonut. Forget the random use of the letter ‘K’ , that’s vodka, chocolate and coconut all in one frosty bottle. It’s a Bounty bar in liquid form which is no bad thing if you like Bounty bars… They suggest bumping up the coconut going 50:50 Stoli Chocolat Kokonut and coconut water for a Stoli Chocolat Martini or adding a touch of fruit in the recipes below:

Stoli Chocolat Temptation

25ml Stoli Chocolat Kokonut

25ml coconut water

25ml pineapple juice

Method:

Shake with ice and strain into a rocks glass.

Stoli Chocolat Kokonut Sweet Tart

50ml Stoli Chocolat Kokonut

Muddled raspberries

20ml lime juice

15ml sugar syrup

Method:

Build ingredients in a highball glass over ice and stir. Garnish with a raspberry.

The Cocktail Lovers say:

Try freezing your coconut water in ice cubes then adding to a glass of your favourite rum.
