Great British Bake Off review: Pastry proves too much for Glenn
With six bakers competing for a place in the quarter final, this week’s Bake Off was more competitive than ever.
Glenn was the only man left standing after last week’s episode, and felt he had a lot to prove (no pun intended). He struggled through with his rough bakes, and broke the rulebook with his own version of puff pastry, but no doubt had the weight of Howard’s exit last week hanging heavily on his shoulders.
Star baker extraordinaire Christine continued to with the self-flagellation, but began to speak to camera with the confidence of a winner. “It’s not terribly difficult making a pudding like this,” she said during the Suet pudding signature bake, “but what you have to do is keep it light, and it must be well cooked. A slightly raw heavy suet is no joy!” She is prime fodder for Delia Smith’s online cookery school, if she doesn’t win.
Ruby turned her attention away from bad-mouthing her Twitter critics this week, and channelled her energies into trying to be more confident after her warning from Mary. This was mildly successful until the religieuse choux pastry technical challenge, when the junior baker declared: “I’m terrible at piping, absolutely abysmal” and then- shockingly- came second.
Kimberley was rather more pleased with herself this episode. She grinned with pride throughout at how wonderful her custard was (“I’m really pleased with that custard”), her enviable timekeeping skills (“I might be ahead of time”) and her talent for choux pastry (“it’s actually very simple, people are more scared of it than they need to be”).
Beca produced three solid bakes this week, and continued to fly the flag for Wales with her savoury lamb and vegetable suet pudding. She won her first technical challenge of the series with her neat, well-piped chocolate-covered religieuse, and went onto make a monster puff pastry that swelled up to a size that would rival Glenn’s bakes.
Glenn’s unrefined bakes, however, got the better of him this week and he was sent home. His showstopper mille feuille collapsed in a sticky mess, and Paul was not impressed with his pastry-wrapped-in-butter technique, which failed to build up the flaky layers well enough. He was a fun contestant to watch and will be missed.
Frances was named this week’s star baker. The designer continued her gimmicky cooking, but to greater effect, producing some beautifully crafted ‘sheet music’ mille feuille, ‘bass clef’ palmiers and ‘French framboise’ cream horns.
Beca’s unpolished cooking might see her go next week, but I think Kimberley, Christine and Frances will be left fighting for the title.
