Morrissey: file under Classic Humour

morissey Morrissey: file under Classic HumourI disagree with my esteemed colleague Boyd Tonkin about Morrissey’s autobiography (first page, right, courtesy of Jenny Colgan).

That it should be published as a Penguin Classic is a joke, and quite a good one.

One witticism could destroy the credibility of the Penguin Classics brand only if everyone’s face were po-shaped. After all, this is an imprint that has published all sorts of turgid stuff by Turgenev and Dostoevsky.

I can take the Penguin Classics thing as a joke – but what is that ‘center’ doing mid page? Not just pretentious crap – it’s Americanised pretentious crap.

If you really think Dostoievsky is no more than turgid stuff, then there is little hope for you.
