The Index ranks towns and cities across England by various factors including property values, density of households, road safety and crime.

Milton Keynes comes top thanks to its combination of wealthy homeowner density, low rates of road traffic accidents, and relatively low crime. Second is Stockport, followed by Leeds in third. Places to avoid include Middlesbrough, Huddersfield and Oldham which the Index identifies as the least favourable towns for trick or treating because of its lower property values and population density, and higher crime and road traffic accident figures.

Lawrence Hall of Zoopla said: “Seasoned trick or treaters know the secrets to securing the best Halloween haul and stay safe while doing so. The combination of a high density of affluent homes along with good road safety and low crime is the key to success on Halloween. Homeowners in Milton Keynes might want to stock up on treats, or they may find themselves on the end of a trick or two.”

Within London, the top three trick or treating hot spots were named as Barnet, Bromley and Richmond upon Thames.

One in five said they would be encouraged to view the property. More than two fifths said the prospect of sharing their home with a ghost would be enough to put them off a viewing, while 37% of people were completely indifferent.
