The Children’s Book Blog Christmas Countdown: Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
For December I’ve decided to turn the children’s book blog into a sort of literary advent calendar. Every day of the month I’ll be posting a short recommendation of a wintry or Christmassy children’s book to warm your cockles or, in some cases, chill the blood. There’ll be something for readers of all ages, from picture books all the way up to YA. My choice for December 3rd is Maggie Stiefvater’s ‘Shiver’.
One for the teens today: Maggie Stiefvater’s best-selling tale of girl meets werewolf, girl falls in love with werewolf, werewolf turns out to be hot boy when not in wolf’s clothing. There are undeniable parallels to be drawn with the Twilight saga here, not least because the book features an interspecies relationship between a human and a supernatural being. It’s also, to coin a phrase, ‘totes emosh’. Stiefvater really knows how to tap into teenage fears and desires in a way that I’m sure many young people – boys and girls – will be able to identify with.
To be perfectly honest, there’s not a whole lot of substance to the story beyond that (despite shoehorning in the odd line of Rilke) but Stiefvater’s prose is uncharacteristically well-crafted for a teen page-turner and the wintry Minnesota setting contrasts deliriously with the burning passions of the protagonists.
Check back tomorrow to see which book is lurking behind the ‘calendar door’ for December 4th and catch up on my previous recommendations here
