4 How the Grinch Stole Christmas 217x300 The Children’s Book Blog Christmas Countdown: How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. SeussFor December I’ve decided to turn the children’s book blog into a sort of literary advent calendar. Every day of the month I’ll be posting a short recommendation of a wintry or Christmassy children’s book to warm your cockles or, in some cases, chill the blood. There’ll be something for readers of all ages, from picture books all the way up to YA. My choice for December 4th is Dr. Seuss’s ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’.

Banish all thoughts of that abominable Jim Carrey movie from a few years ago and embrace the anti-Capitalist message of Dr. Seuss’s festive tale about a grumpy old creature who takes it upon himself to ruin Christmas by stealing all the presents, decorations and food from the town near his cave. But (surprise, surprise) he finds his wicked efforts are all in vain and Christmas goes ahead anyway, bringing about a heart-warming epiphany:

“Maybe Christmas,” he thought, “doesn’t come from a store.

“Maybe Christmas… perhaps… means a little bit more!”

I know it’s schmaltzy, but those two lines get me every time. Dr. Seuss’s rhymes are as sublimely witty as ever and the illustrations are quite impossibly charming. Also, has anyone else noticed that the Grinch has eyelashes to die for? Whatever brand of mascara he’s using, I want it!

Check back tomorrow to see which book is lurking behind the ‘calendar door’ for December 5th and catch up on my previous recommendations here
