Who pays the most stamp duty?
According to Knight Frank’s Oliver Knight who has been looking at HM Treasury figures, those buying homes in London and the South East paid over 60% of the total Stamp Duty for the UK in the 2012-13 financial year.
The two regions accounted for around £3.1 billion of the total £4.9 billion in Stamp Duty collected. Homebuyers in the East of England were next at £454 million, followed by the South West at £404 million.
Housing supply and demand
Hometrack says that house prices rose 0.5% in November as demand for housing grew by 3% as supply of homes for sale dropped by 3.5%. Its figures indicate that over the last six months demand has grown by 10.2% while supply has declined by 0.6%.
Live in a windmill

Kent’s successful empty homes scheme
No Use Empty (NUE), the empty homes initiative launched by Kent County Council in 2005 has now returned 3,027 long-term empty homes to use, 660 in the last year.
The scheme has received a total investment of £25 million, a third coming from the council’s Empty Homes Loan Fund, and the rest from owners and developers. To date, it has delivered new homes at a cost of just over £8,000 per unit, much cheaper than new-build properties.
Mark Dance, Kent County Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “Empty and unused properties can depreciate the value of adjacent properties by up to 18%, so this is an issue that goes way beyond bricks and mortar and impacts the wider social and economic wellbeing of an area. No Use Empty has created 3,000 new homes to date, which not only represents a great return on investment, it has had a pronounced regenerative impact on some of the County’s more deprived areas.”Tagged in: empty homes, stamp duty, windmill
