The Rentoul Media Empire

John Rentoul

The Rentoul Media EmpireFurther to my post yesterday about more of my stuff appearing on Independent Voices, The Independent and The Independent on Sunday’s online and print comment section, and less of it appearing on the blog, the boffins have told me that there is an RSS feed on my author page, which includes my daily catch-up feature:

For those of you using an aggregator (I find feedly’s free service is excellent) this is the widget you need. (There is a computer glitch at the moment: the RSS supplies up-to-date articles, whereas the author page is currently several days behind.)

Anyway, thanks to Press Gazette for listing me as the fourth most influential journalist on social media (they mean Twitter, where you can follow me), behind Piers Morgan, Caitlin Moran and Paul Waugh.

Honoured I am.

And the books:

Tony Blair: Prime Minister (with new Afterword, 2013).

Questions To Which The Answer Is No (2012).

The Banned List (2011). With irregular updates here.

A new book called Listellany, compiling my Top 10s for The Independent on Sunday, will be published by Elliott & Thompson later this year.

Whatever happened to “Independent Minds”? Or indeed Jody McIntyre? Lebedev fired the best for telling the truth? Now to Twitter, I can’t follow you John as you banned/blocked me. You are better than Caitlin Moran. Even Pinochet is better than Moran.

What I would welcome is a bit of transparency with regard to this major change. Was it J. R.’s idea, the editor’s, a bit of both? A response to certain failings such as, er, extreme bias in blogs? A promotion? As a model of such transparency, see how Paul Krugman explained his move from Princeton to City University of New York. I refer to his serious explanation of course, not his little joke that he wanted to be closer to Zabar’s ( a superb Manhattan deli). All we get now is a map of where to find J. R. now, welcome but not truly informative as to what is going on.

I asked a similar question newfriend; was it to outflank Disqus with its penchant for continual change…..?
However the answer seems to be “welcome to the diverse methods available”!

I block people only for swearing, defamation of third parties and filling my timeline with repetitive tweets, so it must have been one of those. Happy to unblock you if that’s understood.

  • JohnRentoul

Except that you seem to have been suspended by Twitter.

  • Ciaran Goggins

The account @CGoggins followed by most human rights lawyers and QCs was suspended after Norfolk Police did not like something I wrote on corruption. My account @sufc15 is very much alive. As for @Broxted one hears North Wales Police are “after him”.

I rarely swear on Twitter. Defamation of third parties? Well now we are into legality Mr R and you are fishin’ in mah bayou. What can legally be said of your pal Louise Mensch? That she was not arrested by North Wales Police for naming Ched Evans “victim”? That is a fact Mr R and facts can be nasty – such as the human rights record of Labour. I got 1.76 million innocent folks DNA samples deleted. It took 8 years.

  • Pacificweather

Would you accept an MBE for your achievements in natural justice?

  • Ciaran Goggins

Bless you Pacific. I guess you are a high ranking Whitehall mandarin with a heart? Longish reply so here goes. Not an MBE as (have you read the difference between MBE and OBE?) I consider that my M.Litt from a Russell group campus puts me in the “Officer” class. Tricky though, as Mrs Schleswig-Holstein-von Glucksburg’s lot only go back to 1100 AD but mine (High Kings Of Ireland) to 120 AD. So in terms of ancestry I outrank her (as do two million others). Finally, recently I have seen a groundswell for human rights activists to be honoured thus. It would mean ZaNuLabour and the Tories acknowledging Britain is and was a de facto police state. I missed out on the Jubilee Medal by a few weeks.
