It was described as an "unforgettable night on the social calendar", an exclusive event for just 400 invited guests.

But sadly, while Heidi Klum and other US-based celebrities put on a brilliant show this Halloween, our own stars left something to be desired with their spooky costumes at the Unicef Halloween Ball.

Actors Gemma Arterton and Hugh Grant chose normal, classy ensembles for the event at One Mayfair in London.

Steve Coogan, whose film Philomena is out now in cinemas, managed to get into the spirit a little more with a traditional vampire outfit.

But the best dressed was swimwear designer Melissa Odabash, who arrived as a bride from beyond the grave.

The event raised money for children affected by the crisis in Syria. Unicef said more than one million children are seeking refuge in neighbouring countries, adding: "Unicef is working night and day for the children of Syria, supplying water, essential vaccines, education and psychological support."
