Hot new acts in 2015: Emre Turkmen, Girlpool, and Tourist reveal the artists to watch out for

We asked five of this year's most-acclaimed new acts which of their fellow up-and-coming artists they're looking forward to seeing this year

The pop star

Emre Turkmen, Years & Years

Turkmen plays synths for British pop trio Years & Years, who topped the BBC's Sound of 2015 list. The group had a number one with recent single 'King'; their debut album 'Communion' is out on 22 June; they are on tour until 19 July

Tei Shi (above) makes electronic music that's quite experimental but she also has big pop moments. I love her voice. She's released great EPs, so I'm looking forward to a whole album.

I'm also looking forward to Currents, the new album from Tame Impala, out in July. They've got their own sound – old and new at the same time; it's quite 1970s psychedelia!

Shura makes quite ethereal and dreamy synth-pop. It's a bit like Berlin, the band from the 1980s, but with good energy.

And Jack Garratt is the most amazing one-man band: he plays bass, guitar, sampler and kick-drum, all on his own. I saw him at a tiny festival in the woods, and it was a great moment; everything just fit together.

The teen punks

Harmony Tividad & Cleo Tucker, Girlpool

The American teens both sing, and play guitar and bass on their sparse punk songs. Girlpool have just released their debut album, 'Before the World Was Big'. They tour the UK from 7 June

Tividad: New Alhambra from Elvis Depressedly is exquisite. The way the songs flow into each other is special.

Tucker: The Fraternal Twin record that just came out ["Skin Gets Hot"] is perfect driving music; it's been great listening on the road.

And [Philadelphia alt-rockers] Blue Smiley's song 'Warm' is great. We're also really excited for the record from [indie-pop singer-songwriter] Frankie Cosmos that's coming.

We're looking forward to playing End of the Road [4-6 September] – it looks beautiful, in the woods, and we're really excited to Sufjan Stevens.

Tividad: And Hello Shark has new music out! The frontman, Lincoln [Halloran], writes incredible lyrics.

The electro-folk duo

Rachel Butt, Gaps

Brighton's Gaps – electro-folk pair Ed Critchley and Rachel Butt – are the first artists signed to DJ/producer Maya Jane Coles' label; their debut album 'In, Around the Moments' is out on 25 May. They tour the UK until 24 June

The highlight of the summer has to be Björk at Wilderness [6-9 August]. Her new album is her at her best. That's closely followed by Goat and Angel Olsen at Green Man. Goat are one of the best bands I've seen live, intense psychedelic rhythmic fun. Angel Olsen is this magical little songstress; I saw her live, and she was spellbinding.

Then, if you're kicking around London, check out Visions festival [8 August], and in particular Peaking Lights, a duo who do quite quirky electronica – it sounds like Tetris music.

I can't wait to hear the next Grimes album – though I may have to wait! She said she's done it but won't release it because it's too depressing. I love that she's original, honest and brave – she's the Jennifer Lawrence of pop.

The dance musician

Tourist

William Phillips, aka Tourist, won a Grammy for his collaboration with Sam Smith on the hit 'Stay With Me'. His single 'Holding On' is out next Sunday; his debut album will be released later this year. He plays festivals across the UK this summer, including Lost Village (Friday to next Sunday)

At Sonar in Barcelona [18-20 June], I'm looking forward to seeing Floating Points – really organic, well-crafted dance – FKA Twigs, [electronic experimentalist] Holly Herndon, and Evian Christ. He's behind the scenes on really big records, like Kanye's, but he's got his own sound.

I haven't listened to much else, as I've wanted to wait until my album was finished, but I want to catch up with George FitzGerald's album – he makes beautiful, sombre dance music; the Kendrick Lamar album everyone is on about; and Arca.

I'm also a recent convert to Sufjan Stevens. [His new record] is incredible – tender in a non-cliché way.

The afrobeat artist

Eno Williams, Ibibio Sound Machine

Williams is the British-Nigerian singer of eight-piece afrobeat band Ibibio Sound Machine, whose eponymous debut album was out earlier this year. They play festivals across the UK this summer, including Wilderness (6-9 August)

I'm loving the debut solo album from Eska; it's very home-spun. I like the way she's brought elements of a modern and old sound together. And the new record by our friends [Afro fusion group] Electric Jalaba has a real freshness to it.

I'm also excited to be playing Citadel Festival in Victoria Park [19 July], as the line-up is pretty cool: Seun Kuti, Anna Calvi, Neneh Cherry – I listened to her while growing up in Nigeria.

I can't wait for Love Supreme [3-5 July], as there are loads of acts we want to check out, from Chaka Khan and [soul-funk bassist] Larry Graham to [jazz trumpeter] Hugh Masekela. And it will be an honour to share a festival stage at Wilderness with George Clinton.
