Josh Barrie is a freelance journalist who likes writing about lifestyle, travel and society, sometimes allowing himself the occasional outburst of political commentary. After qualifying with the NCTJ at the start of this year, he worked as an intern reporter at the Oxford Mail, but now finds himself doing blogs, photos and social media updates for the Oxford Royale Academy. In October, he is planning a long trip to the further points of Asia. There, he hopes to find himself. And write a book. Obviously.

The English language should be cherished, Notebook

The English language should be cherished

For me, there is little worse than a bellowing rendition of Rule Britannia, or a mention of past empirical ‘greatness.’ That said, there is one thing that seemingly does grant us first prize in the lottery of life. That is our language.

MOTD: Football’s back and ready to kick some balls

Saturday will be an exciting day. This weekend our country will erupt into a frenzy of colour and song; sometimes profound, often crass. Football will once again reign supreme.

The dangers of internet copycat behaviour

Take two siblings, perhaps one is eight and one is six. The first, let’s call him Rory, slaps his mother hard across the face at the dinner table.

Twitter advertising: Celebrities are not online estate agents

As disgusting as it is to say this, in our ‘consumer capitalist’ society, advertising is everywhere. And so often the job falls to those most recognisable.

Jubilee workfare: A Dickensian tale brought to life

It’s as though Charles Dickens himself penned this story, and authorities in power have sought to bring it to life 142 years after his death (Died June 9 1970). What a throwback to the dreary Victorian era often portrayed by the novelist; the forgotten unemployed bussed into the capital under moonlight and told to get their ‘heads down’ under a dirty bridge in readiness for a gruelling 14-hour shift.

Sepp Blatter: Penalty shoot-outs must remain, they’re football’s great leveller

As England supporters, we should scorn at any such deciding factor within football. On so many occasions have we watched our team fall foul at a single kick of a football.

Crimbos? We could be heading for EastEnders gone mad

The whole point of the Asbo was to prevent anti-social characters wreaking havoc in local communities, bullying the vulnerable and generally being a mean to other people. Dennis the Menace probably would have been issued with one, even though he said sorry sometimes.

Scotland’s 50p alcohol tax: Battling health with money

Scotland has elevated far beyond Theresa May’s 40p proclamation then, with an impetus to enforce a minimum 50p per unit levy on alcohol prices. Nicola Sturgeon’s arguments are less annoying than Theresa’s at least; if we were to hear yet another tirade of ‘pre-loading’ nonsense I fear for my health for entirely different reasons.
