Mark B: Getting an International Feel for things

Mark B is one of those nomadic, forward-thinking people who has gone through several different guises during his time within the music industry. He is the brains behind the much-lauded International Feel label, as International Feel enters a new phase, Mark has put together a compilation of the label’s releases. I caught up with him recently to speak about his work.

Andy Lysandrou on the relaunch of UK garage label Ice Cream Records

In the mid to late Nineties Ice Cream Records was one of the most popular garage labels. With hits like Double 99’s infamous ‘Ripgroove’ under their belt, they helped to push garage through into the mainstream while maintaining a very underground sound and retaining the credibility, which is no mean feat. Ice Cream Records re-released their entire back catalogue not too long and now look set to push forward with lots of new music. I spoke to one of the men behind the label Andy Lysandrou.

The evolution of UK Bass, Arts

The evolution of UK Bass

Later this week the Red Bull Music Academy hosts its third Culture Clash, a huge music competition which pits four soundsystems against one another. To celebrate the return of the event, Red Bull have hired the historical skills of Elijah (of the Butterz label) to produce a timeline of UK ‘bass’/electronic music. It includes quotes from Red Bull Music Academy lecturers and selected journalists to create a complete history of the music, and I have it exclusively.

Tomson & Benedict take ctrl of the sound

Tomson & Benedict are a duo based in Manchester. Having worked together on several remix projects in recent times, they started to collaborate on their own personal work and eventually decided to launch their own label ‘we_ctrl’ as an outlet for their music. I’ve really enjoyed what they’ve done so far, so I decided to catch up with them for chat about how they got to the point they’re at now.

Unorthodox style: Max Chapman’s entry into underground house music

Max Chapman is a young producer whose entry in to music has been slightly unorthodox. As a youngster he never had much interest in music, but after a friend introduced him to home-production, he became hooked. Picking up his skills via YouTube tutorials, Max quickly shot up the ranks, especially after a collaboration with Frenchman Julien Sandre (No Games) was snapped up by the Hot Creations stable. Here’s a brief chat we had recently.

Out Of The Black and back on tour: Boys Noize

Boys Noize made his ascent to the top of the pile a few years ago, rising up around the time when Erol Alkan, A-Trak and their ilk were also climbing up the ranks. His sound is typically rough, raw and analogue-driven with plenty of bass and jacking beats to keep crowds bouncing the world over. Recently he recorded a few tracks with hip hop legend Snoop Dogg, as well as releasing his third album Out Of The Black, so I grabbed him for a few minutes to see how it’s all going for the Berlin-based producer…

We caught up recently to speak about Alessandro’s life so far.

My Favorite Robot: ‘We pride ourselves on being inclusive and not exclusive’

In an age where house and techno is becoming increasingly repetitive and diluted by an influx of new artists with little imagination, there are (thankfully) still plenty of label owners willing to put their principles before making a quick buck. My Favorite Robot, owned by James Teej, Jared Simms and Voytek Korab is a Canadian-based label that does exactly that. I caught up with Jared recently to speak about all things MFR-related.
