Marcus Barnes is a music journalist with ten years extensive experience in both print and online writing. He is Techno Editor at Mixmag, Social Media Marketing Manager at Point Blank music school and contributes features, reviews and interviews to various publications including Resident Advisor, Ibiza Voice, The Word (Belgium), i-D Online, Notion Magazine, Meoko and more. Burnski is a talented young producer who hails from one of the biggest hotbeds of production in the North of England: Leeds. Last year he relocated from the UK to Berlin, another city which plays host to a large number of musicians, and he hasn’t looked back since. His recent release on Birmingham based One Records, ‘Let It Be’ (featuring Beckford), has caused quite a stir, while he continues to put out a constant flow of high quality electronic music on a variety of other respected labels.

Earlier this year, Amirali Shahrestani released his debut album In Time. He was signed to an album project immediately after sending a few demos to Damian Lazarus, head of much-praised record label Crosstown Rebels. Damian has a reputation for discovering and breaking exciting new talent, which made Amirali’s album a highly-anticipated record – and rightly so, it’s an album that’s full of wistful vocals, tight production and emotive melodies.

Two weeks ago a musician by the name of Chuck Brown passed away, he was widely-regarded as the godfather of go-go. If you don’t know what go-go music is, it’s a derivative of funk and has close ties to hip hop – born in Washington, where it still lives on, go-go came across the Atlantic in the early eighties, but failed to really make its mark on the British music scene.

Dancehall has always been a big love of mine, dating back to the early to mid nineties when my friends would bring in ’sound tapes’, imported from Jamaica, to school. One of the UK’s best current dancehall outfits is The Heatwave crew, who aim to spread the sound as far and wide as they can, and highlight the close ties between dancehall and Britain’s constant slew of talented MCs and lyricists.

Another artist that caught my attention in Miami this year was Tone Of Arc (AKA Derrick Boyd). Rather than just playing records, he performed live with a gleaming, fifties-style, chrome microphone and a guitar. It was refreshing to see such a show, so I made a mental note to track him down on my return to the UK and, when I did, I found footage of his breakthrough performance at the BPM Festival in Mexico earlier this year.
