Her father was the late film composer Georges Delerue, whose music rode the French New Wave with filmmakers like François Truffaut (Jules and Jim) and Jean-Luc Godard (Contempt) before moving to Hollywood in the 1980s (Steel Magnolias, Black Robe).

My personal interest in a new batch of films is the original music that accompanies them. I’m an enormous film score geek, you see, and whilst summer blockbuster season doesn’t always bode well for someone with my musical interests (great scores just as often accompany the sleepy dramas tucked between major movie “seasons”), it at least signals a glut of big-budget, potentially exciting projects that tend to have big scores attached.

Such is certainly true of the new album by Lost in the Trees, a North Carolina folk/instrumental band captained by singer/songwriter Ari Picker. The cover for A Church That Fits Our Needs is a photo of a forlorn looking woman—Picker’s mother Karen, who committed suicide in 2009 soon after leaving his wedding.
